The Things Nobody Tells You About Playing Pickleball

When you first try out Pickleball, you don’t expect what will happen next. Maybe your friend forced you to fill in for their doubles partner, or you saw people playing on the court and thought it looked like fun. Maybe you were just looking for something to do to meet new people and to get active.

Whatever got you on the courts — you won’t be prepared for how Pickleball will take over your life in the best way!

Your calendar will never be the same.

A free 2-hour block in your schedule? It’ll be filled by a quick Pickleball sesh! Suddenly, you’re checking your calendar and squeezing in a game wherever you can. On your lunch break? You’re throwing on your Pickleball shoes and getting a few rallies in. Suddenly, you’re turning down other plans for Pickleball and have a regular group like you’ve known them forever.

Pickleball has a way of filling space in your schedule that you didn’t even know was empty. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!

It’s the first sport that doesn’t make you feel like you’re bad at sports.

You don’t need to be a pro to have a blast — and that’s what makes Pickleball so much fun!

You’ll need to learn a few rules and figure out how to serve, but it doesn’t take long before you’re playing real games and enjoying yourself. That’s exactly why our Intro to Pickleball class exists. In two hours, you’ll learn the basic rules, how to serve, and how to keep track of the score. You’ll leave feeling like a more confident Pickleball player, and best of all, you’ll have a blast while doing it!

Most of us don’t enjoy doing something we’re bad at, but Pickleball is different. When you first start out, you’ll make mistakes. A serve will land in the kitchen. The ball will go a completely different direction than intended. Your dinks will sometimes go into the net, and that’s OK! You’ll be able to laugh off your mistakes and try again.

The most unlikely people become your people.

Our courts bring together people from all walks of life.

On any given day, you might play next to a 50-year-old former college tennis player and a 24-year-old who picked up a paddle six months ago. You’ll meet people from different backgrounds, professions, and generations.

You’ll form unlikely friendships and connections — everyone ends up laughing at the same missed shot and celebrating the same incredible rally.

The game creates connections in a way that’s hard to explain until you’ve experienced it yourself.

You’ll become “a Pickleball person” before you see it coming.

A day will come when you catch yourself explaining the rules of Pickleball to someone who doesn’t know anything about it and you’ll realize, “Wow, OK, I’m a pickleball person now!”

You’ll have a favorite pickleball paddle, preferred court, and maybe even a signature serve. It happens faster than you think, and suddenly, you’re hooked!

The social side sneaks up on you.

When you play in our Group Plays — like our Round Robins and Humpty Dumptys — you’ll play with a lot of new faces. Some of those people will become your friends off the Pickleball court!

You’ll find yourself joining Pickleball group chats, one of them being our RECS WhatsApp community. This is your place to find a doubles partner, ask questions, catch up on announcements, and join a community of players that matches your skill level.

RECS members talk all the time about coming for the game and staying for the community. Come and experience it for yourself!

A few things worth knowing right now.

We’re building two new clubs in Camas, WA, and Corvallis, OR, opening this year! Your membership will get you access to all of our locations, so wherever you may be in the PNW, you can hop on the courts with ease.
